1 Yahweh, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth, who has set your glory above the heavens!
2 From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;
4 what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?
5 For you have made him a little lower than God, and crowned him with glory and honor.

Crowned with dignity, not by merit When David says God made man a little lower than God and crowned him with glory and honor, he is describing a dignity God assigned, not one humanity earned. This matters for grace. Some assume we must climb up to a worthy status before God will notice us; Psalm 8 says the opposite. God stooped to crown small, star-dwarfed creatures with honor as a gift. That same downward motion defines the gospel. Philippians 2 shows Christ descending to lift us. Your worth before God is bestowed, not achieved, and eternal life is offered on the same footing: freely given to those who simply believe. If the crown had to be earned, it would not be a crown of grace at all.
6 You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

The true Son of Man Hebrews 2:6 to 9 quotes these very verses and points them past Adam to Jesus. Right now we do not yet see everything under human feet; sin broke that rule. But we do see Jesus, who was made a little lower for a while and is now crowned with glory and honor, tasting death for everyone. So Psalm 8 is more than a poem about human dignity. It is a quiet signpost to Christ, the true Son of Man, who reclaims what the first man lost. A common objection says the Old Testament rarely speaks of Jesus; passages like this answer it. The One who made the stars entered His own creation, lower for a season, to secure a salvation He gives away free to all who trust Him.
7 All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field,
8 The birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.
