1 Blessed is everyone who fears Yahweh, who walks in his ways.
2 For you will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you.
3 Your wife will be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of your house; your children like olive plants, around your table.
4 Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears Yahweh.
Free Grace note
This is the general pattern of a God-fearing life, not an ironclad contract of guaranteed outcomes. Psalm 128 paints a warm scene: fruitful work, a thriving spouse, children like olive plants around the table. It is meant as wisdom, the broad and usual pattern of a life lived under God's care, much like the book of Proverbs. Read woodenly it becomes a cruel promise, because faithful believers sometimes face childlessness, hardship, or loss. Scripture is honest about that: Job feared God and suffered deeply, and Jesus himself had no earthly wife or wealth. So hold this psalm the way it was meant, as the ordinary goodness that flows to a life aligned with God, not a formula that binds him. And guard the deeper point against a works reading. These blessings belong to the one who already fears the Lord and belongs to him. They flow from grace; they are never the price of it. You enter God's family by faith alone, and the blessings meet you along the road, not at the gate as a toll.
5 May Yahweh bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
