A rock higher than yourself, not higher effort David does not ask to feel stronger; he asks God to lead him to the rock that is higher than I. That little phrase is the heart of grace. The rescue he needs is above his own reach, a place he cannot climb to by trying harder. Notice he prays this when his heart is overwhelmed, not when he has pulled himself together. Some people fear they must first steady themselves before God will help. The order here is the opposite: overwhelmed first, then led to the rock. Paul later names that rock as Christ himself, who followed Israel through the wilderness (1 Corinthians 10:4). When you are sinking, higher ground is a Person, and he came down to lift you up. You come as you are, and he is the one who does the lifting.
3 For you have been a refuge for me, a strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will dwell in your tent forever. I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings. Selah.

Dwell forever means a settled home, not a rented room I will dwell in your tent forever, David says, and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. The word forever is not poetic exaggeration. It reflects a confidence that his place with God is secure and lasting, not renewed day by day on good behavior. The image of wings pictures a bird sheltering its young, tender and safe. Jesus used the same picture over Jerusalem, longing to gather her children under his wings (Matthew 23:37). Someone might object that our standing surely depends on staying faithful. But David grounds his forever in God's faithfulness, not his own; verse 5 says God has heard, God has given. The shelter holds because the One sheltering never moves, and eternal life is a settled home he gives, not a room we must keep paying for.
5 For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life; his years shall be for generations.
7 He shall be enthroned in God’s presence forever. Appoint your loving kindness and truth, that they may preserve him.
8 So I will sing praise to your name forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.
