1 Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised, in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2 Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King.
3 God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge.

The city's safety was her God, not her walls God has shown himself in her citadels as a refuge. The psalm praises Zion as beautiful and strong, yet it quietly locates the real security not in the stone and mortar but in the God who dwells inside. A city is only as safe as its God. This matters because we are all tempted to trust our defenses, our savings, our plans, our reputations, as though they were the source of our safety. Zion's towers were real, but they were not the refuge; God was. The same is true for the believer. Our security in Christ does not rest on the strength of our faith, our discipline, or our record. It rests on the God who dwells with us. Build all the walls you like, but know where the refuge actually is.
4 For, behold, the kings assembled themselves, they passed by together.
5 They saw it, then they were amazed. They were dismayed. They hurried away.
6 Trembling took hold of them there, pain, as of a woman in travail.
7 With the east wind, you break the ships of Tarshish.
8 As we have heard, so we have seen, in the city of Yahweh of Armies, in the city of our God. God will establish it forever. Selah.
9 We have thought about your loving kindness, God, in the midst of your temple.
10 As is your name, God, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of your judgments.
12 Walk about Zion, and go around her. Number its towers.
13 Mark well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces, that you may tell it to the next generation.
14 For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death.

A guide even through death For this God is our God forever and ever. He will be our guide even to death. This is not a God for the easy stretch only, but one who walks with His people all the way through the valley and out the other side. In Christ that promise deepens: the guide has Himself gone through death ahead of us and defeated it (1 Corinthians 15:55-57), so that death is now a doorway, not a dead end. Some fear that assurance ends where the grave begins. This verse says the opposite. God guides us to death, and Christ guides us through it. Eternal life is a present possession that death cannot cancel, because the One who holds you has already conquered the last enemy. Tell the next generation, as verse 13 urges, that this God guides His people the whole way home.
